Skateboard Park-Dallas,Texas FW6

This was my first ever visit to America, for someone who hates flying this was a massive thing for me. Having arrived at Dallas FW I was immediately struck by how huge not only the airport was , but everything seemed so much larger than in the UK (especially my first meal of half a cow and fries).

My assignment was the Skateboard Park in Allen, a daunting place full of adolescent teenage boys, covered in tattoos and piercings, this really was not my comfort zone. After 2 days I befriended quite a few of the skaters and produced a slideshow for them which can be found here

Thanks to all the staff, team leaders and participants that made FW6 a truly memorable experience for me and I hope to see you all again next year

David
www.dpphotography.co.uk

I spent the week last week as one of the staff photographers for the FW6. What a great way to really see what goes on at this workshop. Ben Chrisman and I split up the assignments and spent a couple days driving around grabbing some photos of the attendees covering their assignments. I have to tell you, I went into some of the locations and I seriously don't know how these guys and gals were able to pull of the stories they captured. I watched their confidence levels rise from day one to day two. They all grew leaps and bounds and I grew watching them. I'm proud to call these people my friends and I'm so proud of what they did last week. I'm still trying to sort it all out in my head. Hopefully I'll be able to describe the experience a little better in my next post.

I'm going back to day one and posting a few of the photos I captured. I came to FW6 with a preconception that i will learn about shooting techniques & style, but instead i learn how to be a person. What i took home was more than just techniques, I learnt how to listen and connect to my subjects, learning how to hear their voices and stories. Most importantly I learnt to love my subject, and by doing that I was able to tell their story in my own unique way. I took home a life changing lesson that no other workshop can offer. In addition, I gain a new family. At first I thought I would just expand my network, but I came home missing and longing to come back to the experience with my new family, and talk about what we enjoy most: capturing moments that will change people’s life.

Finding Me

Much like the anticipation of having a first baby, one really never knows what they are getting themselves into. This was much like my first experience as a volunteer at FW6. I'm so glad that my initiation into Foundation was on these terms. I was able absorb amazing amounts of knowledge and inspiration as I fluttered from one editing room to the next, listening intently on the thoughts of the team leaders & members to their participants. Watching the images one by one on the screen, learning something about the photographer both as a person and artist. Feeling comfortable enough to present my own thoughts and feeling my own self grow as the creative doors opened in my mind. Seeing so much growth from each photographer after 2 days of shooting was amazing. And knowing that all that knowledge and creative energy will follow them out the Foundation door and into the world.

Sharing knowledge is a beautiful thing.
Thank you all

Well I'm just blown away.

Last night's dinner was indescribably
amazing. I loved it all. Annie picked me up at the airport at noon and
I couldn't stop talking about the whole experience and just how
talented you all are. We sat at my desk and watched Ben and Joe's
slideshows and she was asking me who everyone was. A shot of Aga came
up and I started talking about her first- and second-day experiences
and just started breaking down. It's going to be weeks before I can
regain my composure, I think. That's how much you all have affected me.

Blown away. Yup.

Can't wait 'till next year!

- Bill Holland
